The White Ribbon Lapel Pin has been used to promote public awareness of Retinoblastoma also known as Retinal Blastoma,is as cancer of the retina (inner layer of the eye). It was not until 2007 that researchers discovered identified the cell which causes Retinoblastoma previous to this the only treatment was to remove the eye affected by the cancer before it could spread. Development of Retinoblastoma is initiated by mutations that inactivate both copies of the RB1 gene, which codes for the retinoblastoma protein in the eye.
